TREATMENT and RELAXATION what is Shiatsu The healing art of Shiatsu uses physical pressure and meridian stretches to work on the body's energetic systems to promote health and spiritual well-being. Shiatsu is a healing art originating in Japan that uses the power of touch and pressure to enable each of us to contact our own abilities for selfhealing. Shiatsu as therapy In a Shiatsu session the practitioner uses pressure with her or thumbs, fingers, palms and sometimes elbows, knees and feet to induce deep relaxation and a feeling of well-being. It is sometimes a dynamic, sometimes a more static form of therapy, involving pressure on and stretching of the limbs and torso, kneading and releasing tight muscles and supporting areas of weakness. Shiatsu was developed from traditional oriental massage and in common with acupuncture and other oriental therapies, it works upon the body's energetic system using the network of meridians or energy pathways that relate to the functioning of the internal organs as well as our emotional, psychological and spiritual harmony. Energy, known as Ki in Japanese ( Qi in Chinese ), flows throughout the body like a system of rivers and canals. Things may happen to upset the smooth flow of Ki, causing blockages or dams in some areas and weaknesses or stagnant pools in others. These blockages or weaknesses in turn may lead to physical symptoms, or simply to a feeling that "things are just not quite right." Shiatsu uses physical pressure and meridian stretches to unblock the dams - which shows up as tight muscles and areas of stiffness - and revitalize the empty areas - wich may feel cold, weak or just needing to be held. Shiatsu massage in practice Both for treatment and relaxation Shiatsu can be suited for you. The way I work is as follow: you tell your needs and wishes (physical symptoms or simply a feeling that "things are just not right", special complaints, reducing tensions, improving circulation, relaxation, etc.) We research possibilities and if necessary your medical history. Depending on needs and possibilities, we work out a plan. Generally sessions are 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. Shiatsu is almost always practiced on the floor, on a thin Japanese cotton futon or on a mattress. Being at the floor level means that I can use my body weight rather than muscle power to apply the pressure. It is possible to lay on the side - usefull for pregant women and people with certain back or chest conditions. Shiatsu can also be given in a sitting position on a chair or on a special massage table. During the session I generally works all over the body: arms, legs and feets, back, abdomen, neck and head. A massage take's fourty-five minutes, one hour or ninety minutes. Shiatsu can help Many conditions are particularly suitable for Shiatsu treatment, including headaches and migraine, acute and chronic back pain (especially if of muscular origin) muscular stiffness and injuries, some forms of arthritis and rheumatic complaints. Working as it does on the body's internal organs, Shiatsu can also have a role in the treatment of digestive and intestinal disorders and circulatory, respiratory and reproductive problems. Because Shiatsu works on relaxing the body at a deep level and contacting the more subtle aspects of one's energetic makeup, it can also help in the treatment of anxiety, tention, depression and emotional instability. clients advice for treatment Shiatsu is performend through light clothing - a cotton sweatsuit or similar garment is ideal (or wear loose clothing) have a snack about an hour before the session so you are neither full nor hungry drink plenty of spring water after treatment to flush out any toxins released * The effects of Shiatsu massage At the end of the treatment the client usually feels very relaxed whit a sense of well-being and peace. Sometimes there is a feeling of invigoration, increased "get up and go". Both of these reactions can be put down to the deep energetic effect of the massage. While working meridians and specific points helps to regulate the energetic level, pressure also has the physical effect of stimulating the circulatory, lymphatic and hormonal systems. This pressure also regulates the activity of both divisions of the automatic nervous system and releases toxins. These all help to activate the body's self-healing mechanisms. After the massage you feel reborn!
